Use of strand jacks lifting:
Strand jacks can be used horizontally for pulling objects and structures, and are widely used in the oil and gas industry for skidded loadouts. Oil rigs of 38,000 t have been moved in this way from the place of construction on to a barge. Since multiple jacks can be operated simultaneously by hydraulic controllers, they can be used in tandem to lift very large loads of thousands of tons. Even the tandem use of two cranes is very difficult operation

Description of strand jacks lifting:

The strand jack lifting technique originates from the concrete post tensioning principle. A strand jack can be considered a linear winch. In a strand jack, a bundle of steel cables or strands are guided through a hydraulic cylinder; above and below the cylinder are anchor systems with wedges that grip the strand bundle. By stroking the cylinder in and out while the grips are engaged in the anchors, a lifting or lowering movement is achieved.

The motion of the cylinders is driven by hydraulic power packs. They can be electric or diesel powered. Our sophisticated SCC software program synchronizes the motion of the strand jacks and adjusts the motion to the loads per lifting point

Working principle of strand jack lifting

The high tensile strands used in strand jacks are of the same solid wire seven piece construction as used in pre and post tensioned concrete. These strands are often run through an additional manufacturing process to reduce their diameter further by flattening/rounding slightly the outer wires to give the strand more circumferential contact area(Figure 1).The reduction of diameter means more strands can be utilised within a given area although the sectional areas are the same. More contact area with the collects and hence less wear.

Below Figures demonstrates the principle of operation of a strand jack when raising a load. For clarity only one strand has been shown in the diagram. For clarity only one strand has been shown in the diagram. The capacity of a strand jack is directly proportional to the number of strands used. For example, strand numbers can rance from a single strand to 55 strands in a 6600KN jack. Strands are usually 15.2MM in diameter although 18MM diameter strands are sometimes used.The yellow and green sections indicate a hollow hydraulic ram while the black shaded area represents high pressure hydraulic oil. The collets are shaded red and the mating collet housing is shaded blue.
